The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors from the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, was not quick to announce his residency plans right away following his electoral win in November.

"This decision rested on the security of my family and the imperative to directing my complete efforts on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

His home was in Astoria, Queens, a district known for its diverse immigrant communities and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, the community will always live inside me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Campaign Controversy

In his campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his critics, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment although he is from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for public city functions, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting very different than his humble Astoria home.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is rent stabilised, meaning the city regulates on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.

City residents see such units as essential protections as the cost of housing rises faster than the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
