Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on target, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had scored just one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.
