This new direction follows major restructuring at the government-backed institute, including the resignation of its previous CEO last month after both employee protests and official demands for major restructuring.

Growing Cybersecurity Concerns

The new mission comes amid rising apprehension about the UK's exposure to online disruptions and cyber-attacks.

Recent incidents have highlighted these weaknesses, including a widespread failure affecting international online platforms and latest online threats that affected operations at key facilities and distribution networks across various businesses.

A ex-military leader of the Britain's aerial defense command will report back next month on how the publicly-supported center can optimally help the extent of national AI objectives in defense, homeland protection and intelligence.

The center's head, a previous Amazon UK leader, confirmed that 78 different research projects at the organization with 440 employees have been closed, spun out or finished because they do not align with the new direction.
