Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for the Spanish giants, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage creates Real Madrid history in a key European match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a last eight berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I started playing the game, each day you go to train and each day you have a game," stated Pitarch after his debut.

"I have just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his age and experience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He is incredibly dynamic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to perform his normal game.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining the club's renowned youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to represent either country at the highest level.

Under international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at City, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the team pursue future success.

After his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the same. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must earn my minutes on the field," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
