Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her last appearance in the city was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the Australian summer," Williams stated. "I have experienced so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to go back to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Statistical Highlights

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will represent the 22nd time she has appeared in the primary tournament field.

Setting a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to compete in an Open's main draw, surpassing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.

In late December, Williams wed Danish-born actor and model Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
