Amid a unambiguous signal to Western nations, Leader Vladimir Putin informed PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to guarantee “continuous” deliveries of energy resources to India. The announcement came as the two leaders met in the Indian capital and declared their relationship were “resistant to foreign coercion.”

A Signal Directed at the West

This affirmation, delivered Friday, appeared to be a pointed rebuke at Washington, that have sought to urge New Delhi into curtailing its historical ties with Moscow. The context is in response to recent Washington's moves, such as the introduction of trade penalties against Indian goods over its purchase of Moscow's energy exports.

“Moscow remains a reliable source of energy resources and anything required for the advancement of India’s economy,” Putin said. “Moscow stands willing to continue guaranteeing the consistent flow of resources for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, without referencing crude explicitly, echoed the focus by saying that “a stable energy base has been a strong and crucial pillar of the bilateral cooperation.”

Defying US Interference

In the lead-up to the talks, in a television interview, Putin had challenged American pressure on India's dealings with Russia. He argued, “Should America has the right to buy our uranium, why shouldn’t India claim the identical right?”

Putin's arrival represented his maiden visit to India since the onset of the situation in Ukraine, and the two nations made a visible effort to project that the personal rapport between the heads of state remained intact.

A Warm Welcome

In a unusual move, Prime Minister Modi met Putin as he disembarked. The two exchanged a hearty embrace like longtime companions before having a private dinner the night before the summit.

Modi referred to India's partnership with Russia as “a lodestar” and added it was “founded on mutual respect and strong faith.”

Reaffirming Strategic Partnerships

Friday's talks yielded several important deals across military and financial collaboration. A major outcome was the finalization of an strategic roadmap extending until 2030, which sets a goal to increase twofold commerce to one hundred billion dollars annually by the end of the decade.

Additionally pledged to reshape their military partnership. Although Russia is still India's primary source of weapons, the volume has reduced in recent years as India works to widen its sources.

The joint statement highlighted an agreement on the co-development of cutting-edge military systems, though explicit reference of deals for the Su-57 fighter jet were not made.

Overall, Moscow and Delhi reiterated that amid the “current complex, difficult, and unpredictable global landscape, the Indo-Russian partnership stay resilient to external pressure.”
