NY Launches Reporting Tool for Citizens to Share Immigration Footage After Arrests of 4 American Citizens

New York state attorney general has rolled out a fresh digital platform asking citizens to provide visual evidence of immigration raids around New York. This move follows a shortly after a major immigration operation shook NYC's Chinatown, prompting widespread demonstrations.

American Citizens Detained During Enforcement Action

A US congressman revealed during a midweek briefing that four citizens were arrested and kept for "nearly 24 hours" following the previous day's operation. Demonstrations erupted in NYC on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

"Each citizen deserves to exist without intimidation," state officials stated in a statement.

"Anyone who observed and recorded federal operations recently, I ask you to submit that evidence with my office. We are pledged to reviewing these accounts and evaluating any violations of law."

Portal Features

The form offers options to submit images and video footage of the operation, as well as a field to specify geographic details. When submitting, individuals must mark a checkbox that states that "the office might employ any evidence provided in a legal proceeding, including in a court case or official statement."

Information about the ICE Action

The enforcement action, which observers say included over fifty federal agents, happened in a popular area of Manhattan where imitation purses, items, goods and additional items are sold daily in large quantities – frequently to visitors.

Videos of the incident depict several covered and weaponized federal agents zip-tying and detaining a person, and pushing back bystanders. Masses of locals followed the agents down the sidewalks. An armored military vehicle was also seen rolling through the city streets.

Leadership Statements

In a Wednesday press conference featuring the immigrant advocacy group, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, said that four nationals were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where US citizens should be taken for unjustly." He clarified the individuals were freed on the following day with no legal action taken.

"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," Goldman stated. "This is a armed campaign to provoke unrest. It is merely a justification to generate turmoil for this administration to deploy the armed forces to halt conflict that they have created."

Extensive Outcry

Anger over the immigration operation escalated – each of the NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the raid, including NY's governor.

"Repeatedly, the current administration opts for heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, instead of protection. It must stop," a contender declared.

New York City advocacy organizations expressed outrage too.

"Federal officers descended on Manhattan's Chinatown with military-style vehicles, masked agents and riot gear to go after street vendors attempting to earn income. This action had no connection to community security and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and communities," said the president of a rights organization.

ICE Policies

ICE policy bans the arrest of American nationals and the agency has claimed it will not take into custody American nationals. Yet, investigative journalism has found that more than 170 American nationals have been taken illegally by federal agents since the beginning of the current administration.

Ongoing Trend

ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in NY and across the US recently.

A recent action in central NYC was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the current administration. Rallies targeting ICE are commonplace including allegations of violence and inhumane treatment.

Latest, a document submitted by advocacy organizations claimed medical neglect of pregnant women in government custody.
