Mali has temporarily halted educational facilities and colleges across the nation due to a critical energy crisis triggered by a blockade on energy resources imposed by militant groups.

Top education official announced on state television that all academic facilities would stay shut until 9 November, noting that the travel of employees and students had been impacted by the blockade.

He emphasized that the authorities were “working tirelessly” to end the emergency so that educational activities could continue on the tenth of November.

For several weeks, the nation has been facing a petrol crisis, notably in the administrative center, after militants from an al-Qaeda-linked organization enforced a blockade by striking fuel trucks on major highways.

Mali is landlocked, so all energy resources are transported by road from neighboring states such as its western neighbor and Ivory Coast.

Long queues have been winding around gas pumps in the main city in recent weeks, and the city's usually crowded streets have now allegedly become deserted.

The ruling military council had earlier this month reassured the public that it was only a short-term problem, but the emergency has persisted.

In the past few days, the US Embassy in Bamako announced that secondary diplomatic employees and their families would depart the country amid the deteriorating energy crisis and growing protection worries.

It explained that the petroleum supply issues had impacted the power distribution and had the “capacity to affect” the broader protection environment in unexpected forms.

The West African nation is presently governed by a army council led by the military leader, who took control in a military overthrow in recently.

The ruling council had widespread approval when it assumed control, committing to address the long-running security crisis triggered by a independence uprising in the northern territories by the Tuareg population, which was then co-opted by jihadist fighters.

The United Nations stabilization force and French forces had been deployed in 2013 to combat the escalating insurgency.
