Israelis have assembled around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.

The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel responded by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a threat to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities postponed formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams gathered in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the agreement.

A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the talks said that an late session of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.

The representative explained the day's discussions ended without concrete outcomes, because of differences over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.

He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are working hard to reduce the gaps between the both parties.

Key Points in Negotiations

  • An enduring truce
  • The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Measures for assistance deliveries
  • Future administration of the region

Citizen Sentiment

In the city's public square that day, young a woman - whose brother endured the attack on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and numerous more were abducted by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until all the hostages come back not a single person will have peace of mind."

"Once we see all home returned, we can relax again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.

Outside the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states 48 stay in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.

Activist a participant explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the captives to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be protected."

Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of Israeli citizens prefer the conflict to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.

Gaza Circumstances

At the site of the music event, mourners assembled to honor the dead.

From there, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people said the intense Israeli shelling persisted.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, sector and Nasr districts and in the eastern area of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"When the evening falls, the fear appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, clinging, particularly my little child who rests his face on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we monitor the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had taken in the bodies of six people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area reported additional dead people had been brought there. An individual was died by Israeli soldiers while seeking assistance to the south, medics said.
