In excess of 2,000 Exploited Minors and Lone Child Refugee Applicants Lost from British Councils’ Custody

Based on public records data, in excess of 2,000 children who were either victimized or arrived in the UK alone to apply for protection disappeared from protective services in the previous year.

Report Reveals Concerning Data

A study titled “Until the Danger Ceases” sent FoI requests to youth protection agencies across the United Kingdom.

Figures from 135 municipal councils revealed that out of two thousand three hundred thirty-five children categorized as having been trafficked or believed to be trafficking victims, 864 (thirty-seven percent) were listed as disappeared.

In total one hundred forty-one government bodies responded to questions about solo young asylum applicants in their care, who totaled 11,999 minors. Of these, 1,501 (13%) were listed as disappeared.

High Risk for At-Risk Young People

The study, released by advocacy groups, cautions that these categories are at “very high risk” of disappearing from care.

Several exploited minors in the UK are British citizens while the remainder are from abroad.

They are likely to have been subjected to either sexual exploitation or illegal activities misuse, for example by drug trafficking networks.

Institutional Failures in Safeguarding

Government bodies have a statutory duty to safeguard and support exploited and lone minors under youth safety systems. Nonetheless, there is no published federal data on the issue.

The latest analysis cautions that factors such as insecure immigration status can amplify young people’s vulnerability to additional danger, placing them at substantial danger of re-victimization and further abuse.

Demands for Intervention

It says there is a “ongoing and major shortcoming” in care and calls on local authorities and police to ensure adherence to proper procedures.

The researchers also advise the Education Ministry to guarantee all exploited and lone minors can access proper lodging that shields them from being exploited again.

Housing Concerns

Beginning from late 2021, government bodies have been obligated to guarantee that all looked-after children under 16 are placed in settings that give protection.

Nevertheless, teenagers aged 16 and 17 can still be housed in so-called “supervised lodging” that does not offer daily supervision.

During unusual situations, these older children can be assigned to hostels, caravans, tents, vessels, or communal living with unrelated adults.

Expert Reactions

“This analysis emphasizes the risk exploited and lone minors face. It remains challenging to understand why these children continue to be disappointed. They are regularly disappointed by the frameworks meant to support them, whilst being harmed by regulations that worsen the problem.”
“All young people deserves to feel shielded and cared for, yet trafficked and unaccompanied children are consistently let down by the very structures designed to safeguard them.”

Administration Statement

A administration spokesman stated: “This government assumed a minor protection structure unable to satisfy the demands of the state’s most endangered young people.

“Our major minor protection and schooling act is the biggest overhaul of youth welfare in a generation, implementing our mission to eliminate the relationship between young people’s background and their later achievements.”

The spokesperson added that the actions include improving the supply of protective housing, improved communication, obligating the creation of multi-agency child protection teams in every area, and implementing a new responsibility on associates to automatically include learning and care environments in their protection systems to help stop children slipping through the net.
