Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
